What is a bandage?

Bandages are common medical supplies used to fix and protect surgical or injured parts. They are essential for surgical operations. There are many different types and methods of bandaging. You need to choose the appropriate type and method according to the injured part.

Composition of bandages

Made of gauze or cotton cloth.

Uses of bandages

Suitable for bandaging wounds or affected areas on the limbs, tail, head, chest and abdomen.

Gauze bandage

Types of bandages

100% cotton plain weave, wrinkled elastic bandage, ammonia elastic bandage, PBT elastic bandage, cotton gauze woven bandage, viscose plaster bandage.

(1) Reel band
Also known as single band, there are three types: cotton cloth, gauze and elastic reel band. According to the different parts of the reel
There are various names as follows: ① head ② tail ③ body (reel part) ④ inner side (side close to the reel) ⑤ outer side (other side close to the reel) ⑥ upper side ⑦ lower side ⑧ roll mouth.
(2) Double-headed band
It has two heads, and its width and application method are roughly the same as reel band.
(3) Three-head bandage
① Triangular bandage: Made of natural cotton cloth, that is, cut the cotton cloth with four equal sides of about 1 meter diagonally to form two large triangular bandages. If the triangular bandage is cut from the top to the bottom edge of the midline, it can be split into two small triangular bandages. According to the different parts, there are the following names: top point, bottom edge and left and right points. Most of its uses are used to support and suspend hands and forearms.
② T-belt: used to fix perineal dressings and raise scrotum.
(4) Multi-head bandage
① Four-head bandage: made by cutting rectangular cotton cloth or gauze from both ends;
② Chest strap: used to fix chest dressings or increase pressure;
③ Abdominal strap: used to fix abdominal dressings.
(5) Self-adhesive elastic bandage
Self-adhesive elastic bandage is made of pure cotton or elastic non-woven fabric sprayed with natural rubber composite materials through axis rotation and slitting. It is used for clinical external fixation and bandaging, and can also be used to protect wrist, ankle and other joints during exercise.
(6) Sports protective bandage
It is mainly used for sports protection, medical bandage, medical fixation and other different usages. It uses imported medical glue to make it not easy to fall off and has strong elasticity and stretchability.

Bandage method

(1) Circular bandage method

Used for small or cylindrical parts of the limbs, such as hands, feet, wrists and forehead, and also used at the beginning of various bandages. Hold the bandage roll upward with the right hand, unroll the bandage about 8 cm, fix the head of the bandage to the part to be bandaged with the left thumb, and bandage the local area with the right hand in a continuous circular bandage. The number of rolls depends on the need, and the end of the bandage is fixed with a twisted cloth.

(2) Spiral bandage method

Used for parts with approximately equal circumferences, such as upper arms and fingers. Start from the distal end and bandage two rolls in a circular bandage, then spirally wrap at a 30° angle toward the proximal end, with each roll overlapping the previous roll by 2/3, and fix the end with adhesive tape. When there is a lack of bandages for emergency treatment or when a splint is temporarily fixed, the bandages do not cover each other, which is called a snake bandage method.

(3) Spiral bandage method

For parts with different circumferences, such as forearms, calves, thighs, etc., first make a two-circle bandage, then a spiral bandage, then press the middle of the roll with the thumb of one hand, and fold the roll downward from this point with the other hand, covering 1/3 or 2/3 of the front circumference. Each fold must be arranged neatly in a straight line, but each fold should not be between the wound and the bone protrusion.

(4) "8" shaped bandage method

For bandaging and fixing clavicle fractures in joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles, etc. Take the elbow joint as an example, first make 2 rolls of circular bandage in the middle of the joint, wrap the bandage first around the joint, then around the flexion side to the bottom of the joint, around the dorsal side of the limb to the flexion side of the limb, and then around the joint. Repeat this process, forming an "8" shape to bandage the joints continuously above and below, with each roll overlapping the previous roll by 2/3. Finally, make 2 rolls of circular bandage above the joint and fix with adhesive tape.

(5) Reverse bandaging method

Used for the top of the head, fingertips and limb stumps, it is a series of left-right or front-back reverse bandaging. After all the bandaged parts are covered, a circular bandage is applied for two weeks.
