Manufacturing Process of Medical Double-Sided Tape

1. Material Selection

The production begins with choosing medical-grade materials:

Backing Material: Polyurethane (PU), non-woven fabric, or silicone for flexibility and breathability.

Adhesive: Acrylic, hydrocolloid, or silicone-based for skin-friendly adhesion.

Release Liner: Protects the adhesive before use (usually PET or paper-based).

2. Coating the Adhesive

The adhesive is applied evenly onto the backing material using:

Roller Coating – For uniform thickness.

Spray Coating – For fine, controlled layers.

Some tapes use pattern coating (dots or grids) to enhance breathability.

3. Drying & Curing

The coated material passes through an oven or UV curing system to solidify the adhesive.

Ensures optimal tackiness without oozing or residue.

4. Laminating the Second Adhesive Side

A second adhesive layer is applied (if needed) and covered with a release liner.

Some medical tapes have different adhesives on each side (e.g., stronger for device attachment, gentler for skin).

5. Die-Cutting & Slitting

The tape is cut into:

Pre-cut shapes – For wound dressings or ECG electrodes.

Precision lasers or rotary die-cutters ensure clean edges.

6. Sterilization (If Required)

Ethylene Oxide (EtO) Gas – For sensitive materials.
